Pressure Induced Amorphization in Crystalline Silica: Soft Phonon Modes and Shear Instabilities in Coesite
نویسندگان
چکیده
Quartz and closely related materials will transform under pressure from crystalline states to amorphous forms. Here we examine coesite, a high pressure form of silica which also undergoes pressure induced amorphization. We nd that coesite, like quartz, possesses a shear instability closely coupled to a zone edge phonon softening at pressures comparable to the amorphization transformation. The commonality of these features strongly suggests that a coupling between a shear and a phonon soft mode plays an important role in pressure induced amorphization. This mechanism is similar to that observed in martensitic transformations. The densities for the phases produced at high pressures, as calculated from variable cell shape molecular dynamics, follow the experimental glassy region joining coesite to stishovite. A New Phase and Pressure Induced Amorphization in Silica
Using first principles variable cell shape molecular dynamics, we predict a new structure for silica. This structure results from annealing a-quartz at pressures near a major phonon instability. The new phase is obtained by rotations of SiO4 tetrahedra producing edge-sharing SiO6 octahedra and SiO5 cuboids. This type of mechanism was proposed to account for structural transitions in silicate me...

We present a detailed and quantitative examination of the thermodynamics and phase change mechanisms (including amorphization) that occur upon shock wave loading and unloading of silica. We apply DebyeGrüneisen theory to calculate both the Hugoniot of quartz and isentropic release paths. Quartz converts to stishovite between 15 and 46 GPa without undergoing pressure-induced amorphization and pe...

Silicon dioxide has eight stable crystalline phases at conditions of the Earth's rocky parts. Many metastable phases including amorphous phases have been known, which indicates the presence of large kinetic barriers. As a consequence, some crystalline silica phases transform to amorphous phases by bypassing the liquid via two different pathways. Here we show a new pathway, a fracture-induced am...

Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation on a (100) oriented silicon surface were performed to investigate the mechanical behavior and phase transformation of single crystalline silicon. The direct crystalline-to-amorphous transformation is observed during the nanoindentation with a spherical indenter as long as the applied indentation strain or load is large enough. This a...

High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction method with precise control of hydrostatic conditions, typically with helium or neon as the pressure-transmitting medium, has significantly changed our view on what happens with low-density silica phases under pressure. Coesite is a prototype material for pressure-induced amorphization. However, it was found to transform into a high-pressure octahe...
